Indian Govt restricts import of laptop and server

India prohibited the import of laptops, servers, and many other consumer electronic goods, announcing that it will require a licensing licence for imports.in a move analysts say appears to be aimed at boosting the local manufacturing efforts.

A government notification stated that the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra tiny form factor PCs, and servers that fall under HSN 8741 shall be “restricted,” adding that the import will be permitted in exchange for a valid license for restricted imports. Passengers who have those devices in their luggage shall be exempt from the limitation.

The move, which follows a similar curb on smart TV imports years ago, is likely to help boost local manufacturing, but New Delhi did not offer an explanation. India’s ban on smart TV imports nearly three years ago boosted local manufacturing, according to analysts.

In recent years, India has offered incentives to businesses in an effort to increase domestic output. A wide range of smartphone manufacturers have joined the campaign, and now chip-makers and semiconductor producers are starting to take notice as well.

Narendra Modi government unveiled a $2 billion scheme aimed at promoting businesses locally building hardware like laptops, PCs, servers and related edge computing kits. The scheme was an upgrade to the previous program under which the government was willing to spend $892 million.

The idea behind this policy statement appears to be to give the nation’s growing population of digital citizens secure access to the internet. The chairman of the Indian Cellular and Electronics Association, Pankaj Mohindroo, said in a statement: “We are positive that valid licenses will be granted to trustworthy industry partners, enabling Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) and unrestricted access to trustworthy brands for digital consumers.
